At the close of this hour-long piece, nine barefoot dancers have joined on what\u00a0is now a floor covered with dirt. The dancers have swished the dirt into hieroglyphics that perhaps no one can decipher. Facing the audience, the company offers a peaceful farewell, raising and lowering their arms with their feet in parallel. They look like a flock of birds moving as one.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Israel\u2019s highly regarded\u00a0Vertigo Dance Company\u00a0<\/a>packed\u00a0Baryshnikov Arts Center<\/a>\u00a0to perform this meditative work. Choreographed\u00a0by\u00a0Noa Wertheim<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rina Wertheim-Koren<\/a>, it shows\u00a0passages of explosive energy and abstract design with refreshing musicality.\u00a0Avi Belleli<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0mesmerizing score is marked by three extended pauses for silence, made further dynamic in its\u00a0mood\u00a0swings\u00a0between\u00a0the\u00a0mournful and frenetic. The dirt \u2014 its smell,\u00a0dust, and malleability \u2014transports us to a country bound by the desert.<\/div>\n

Several duets stand out. Two women mirror each other\u2019s slow-motion curves and stretches. In another,\u00a0a woman holds on to a man\u2019s arms as he swings her around and around in the space emptied of others. Some of the unison choreography evokes folk dance with\u00a0one\u00a0hand hitting a foot behind the back or performers jumping into second to make the dirt fly. Right hands held aloft could easily be gripping cell phones taking selfies\u00a0were\u00a0it not for their furious\u00a0shaking.<\/div>\n

In the middle, four young lithe women run and jump repeatedly into the arms of five\u00a0stationary\u00a0men. The men repeatedly slap the back of their hands on their thighs with enough force for the hands to rebound\u00a0and\u00a0hit their chests, thus making a four-beat cycle.
